Bug Band From Plants That Repel Mosquitoes
74BugBand From Plants That Repel Mosquitoes
So this new Bug Band is made from plants that repel mosquitoes and it's about time someone came up with a product like this. The only catch for me is that the company decided to market their product through the As Seen On TV people so you have to wonder how well it works.
For years in Florida I have suffered from mosquitoes and I've probably used gallons of insect repellent. It works great but it's nasty. These sprays that repel mosquitoes stink, are gross and now in turns out filled with chemicals that are probably very bad for us. Deet is most likely the worst, but there are others. Now I will admit that I've been less worried about poisoning myself than the fact that these mosquito repellents are just uncomfortable.
I happen to be an early morning runner and there is nothing worse than smelling mosquito repellent during a run and having it run into my eyes and burning while I sweat. I'm not sure if it's better than being eaten alive. But, I use it.
Natural mosquito repellents are obviously the way to go, but until Bug Band, I've never found anything that worked well. Around the house we tried citronella candles but they are pain and don't do a whole lot. One neighbor suggested we plant geraniums around our front door and patio because geraniums are plants known to repel mosquitoes. We did this and actually noticed a slight difference. Unfortunately we can't just rub geraniums all over ourselves every time we want to go outside.
But, when I first saw this Bug Band As Seen On TV commercial, I heard the word geraniums and perked up. This BugBand was a bracelet made from an extraction process of the oils from geraniums and concentrated into a chemical free, natural mosquito repellent. No Deet, No Mess, No Grossness no Nothing!
So I had to give it a try. Watch the BugBand commercial so you can get a better idea of what I saw, and what attracted me to the product.

Bug Band Reviews
Ok now that you've seen the commercial lets get to those bug band reviews. I happen to love this product because it works. However, I don't think just using the bracelet is a fail safe way to get rid of mosquitoes, but I do find that it is pretty effective.
Here's what it is. The bug band is a bracelet made with geraniol, the oil extracted from geraniums. It is extremely safe, with a pleasant scent and even can be used around food. This is the complete opposite of traditional mosquito repellents which are loaded with chemicals.
There have been a lot of natural alternatives to traditional mosquito repellents over the years but they all had very limited effectiveness. Bug Band is different and the geraniol works in a lot of different situations and lasts for several hours. Even though, Bug Band repellent comes in a pump spray and in towelettes, I'm only using the bands and this review speaks only to those. I mentioned above that the band works, but I'm quite confident that the other forms of bug band would provide more complete protection. If I saw them in stores, I would definitely buy them for myself.
Now, I'm not just singing the praises of Bug Band on my own, they have gotten some significant press and endorsements regarding their effectiveness. There were studies at the University of Florida regarding geraniol as a viable bug repellent and the product has been featured on Good Morning America and the Today Show as an alternative to sprays containing harsh chemicals. So this is not something that's new. It is just new to as seen on TV marketing.
A lot of companies love the mass exposure they get from infomercials and not all infomercial products are outrageous or silly gadgets. There are some hidden gems among them and bug band is definitely one of those. I think part of the appeal to the infomercial crowd is that you can just put on the bracelet and go. A quick fix and that's it. It seems like a miracle and these magic bullet type products are a perfect fit for this type of marketing. So whatever your experience with As Seen On TV products, don't judge this book by its cover.
Again, this bug band review focuses on only the wristband so here is that works. Once you put on the wristband the geraniol vapors form a protective shield witch keeps insects at a distance. It's not just mosquitoes, but fleas, ticks and gnats are repelled by geranium as well. One of the best things about the wristband is that it is waterproof and the geraniol does not become diluted in water so it keeps working.
The claims are that the bug band wristband works up to 120 hours but I myself cannot verify that. It is also reusable and can be stored in the little pod it comes with which is a pretty nice feature. Further, it's pretty versatile for a wristband. You can hook it through belt loops, the back of hats, onto collars, to the tent pole, on baby strollers and a ton of other things. This is a far cry from chemical sprays.
The bug band comes individually or in a family pack of four and has a bunch of different colors for fun. I need to point out that the company states that these are great for light duty meaning that for more thorough protection, perhaps the pump spray or towelette versions would be better.
I'm pretty happy with my wristbands but as stated above if I saw the other products I would grab them. But, I ordered these off the website and I got a second set free but they added an extra $6.95 shipping an handling. If you chose to order be careful and uncheck the box saying you want to double your order and receive the bonus gift. This will effectively double your already double order and you don't want that. This is the type of thing that gets these TV companies in trouble with consumers because they appear deceptive. Just read the form carefully before you agree to anything.
If you really want the product, buying from Amazon will help you avoid the dangers of buying from the official site.
For effectiveness I'm giving the bug band a 9, but for ease of ordering, I give it a 2. There you have it. Bug Band is for real
