Rx Locker As Seen On TV

The Rx Locker is a handy little device being sold by Dr. Drew Pinsky in an effort to raise awareness about prescription drug abuse. I applaud this effort and every one who is behind this product certainly has their hearts in the right place. But, the Rx Locker has been available for a few months and even though there has been extensive television promotion on the Daytime talk show circuit, sales could be better.

Enter Discovery Channel's Infomercial hit, "Pitchmen", which will try and get the word out there about Rx Locker on episode 3 of season two early in September. To me, featuring a product that has not been in invented by some garage inventor and has already gone to market is a quite curious decision and I wonder about the motivation.  I should be fair and point out that the actual pitch was made for the inventor's product called the Fridge Locker

Pitchmen is a launching pad for inventors who are skilled enough to present a compelling pitch to the production team and smart enough to have an idea worth mass marketing to the public. The success of the show is do in part to that shot at the American Dream and the carnival like presentation of Infomercial Products themselves.

The Rx Locker certainly does not have that David v. Goliath appeal, and they do not to fork over a huge percentage of the sales to a bunch of snake oil salesmen to get it to market because it is already in several major retail outlet. So what gives?

Let's go back a year and talk about drugs. Specifically, the fact that drugs contributed to the death of Pitchmen co-founder and Infomercial King Billy Mays. After such a tragic loss, many in the industry wondered if their marketing would suffer without their loudmouth super star badgering consumers into buying their products. Several companies tried to continue running commercials starring Mays after his death but reaction was mixed. So the industry is attempting to move on and Pitchmen is memorializing their deceased super star with touching segments, honors and a message. It is obviously important to the entire team at Pitchmen that people understand the dangers of drug abuse.

The drug issue, more specifically, prescription drug abuse is an extremely hot topic and any chance to get the issue in front of a national audience on a hit television show is an opportunity that should not be missed. They found a way to get Rx Locker on the show and I'm happy they did. But the product raises some serious concerns.

Rx Locker Reviews

It troubles me a bit to do this Rx Locker Review because the need for this product is so great that pointing out any of its flaws might do it a disservice but I have to be honest here.  If you saw the Rx Locker commercial above you may have picked up on what I'm talking about.

The Rx Locker is a smart little item designed to keep Prescription Drugs out of the hands of those who shouldn't have access to it.  It is a locked box in the shape of connecting prescription medicine bottles with a combination lock to deter further inspection.  It holds up to four prescription bottles inside but to me it screams "pick me up and try to open me!".  It just looks so tempting. But if you are worried about someone taking your meds, then you have to do something.

The Problem with the Rx Locker is that the type of lock mechanism does not keep the drugs inside safe. It is easily broken by even a child and that won't do. If you take a look at the Rx Locker commercial again, you will see that Dr. Drew does not say anything about its ability to keep the drugs away from people, only that the product sends a message to people that there is a reason these drugs are under lock an key.

During several of his talk show appearances it is brought up that this product can be easily broken into and he replies with the idea that the Rx Locker sends a strong message. The benefit of this thing is really that if it has been tampered with, you will know. So if the kids are into your prescriptions, you will know about it. Gone are the days where someone can just lift a few pills and you are non the wiser.

But, if someone you know has a prescription drug problem, they will do whatever it takes to get their hands them. This device will not deter them but there will be clues left behind. Having said that, if you just need a private place to stash you scripts then this thing is perfect for some privacy while you travel, keep meds at the office or just don't want people to know what you are taking.

So the Rx Locker is a great idea but will it deter those who really want to get at its contents? The issue of Prescription Drug abuse is a serious one and the Rx Locker promotes dialogue about it. Unfortunately it is my opinion that message is stronger than its construction.

However, it has been pointed out to me that my opinion of the integrity of the Rx Locker is not correct. I became enamored with the drug safe I mentioned below that the Rx Locker has reminded me that they import a better version of the safe mentioned below and will provide that safe at cost to anyone who wants that type of technology. Now to me that sounds like Rx Locker is standing behind their product and putting their money where their mouth is.

I do not want to sound like a corporate mouthpiece for a product, especially since I like making fun of products whenever I can, but I feel compelled to share the letter I got from Rx Locker because the subject matter is so serious and there are plenty of people out there suffering right now. Gotta Tell you though, Rx Locker seems to be a company that cares out our well being and does not want us to get suckered by an over priced drug safe.  Maybe the Pitchmen really know what they are doing.

Email I Received From Rx Locker

I'd like to introduce myself, I am Kevin Alan the inventor of the Rx Locker and I want to thank you for featuring Rx Locker on your Hub page. I noticed you have some information on your site that is slightly incorrect. I will mention to you the issues and I would appreciate if you would correct them. Please feel free to use these details in a revision of your article.

#1. Rx Locker is currently for sale in 7,800 Walgreens stores, over 4,200 CVS Stores and select Bed Bath and Beyond stores, as well as many regional pharmacies across the country. It is selling very well in those stores. We have 40’ containers full coming in every month.

#2. Rx Locker isn’t easy to break into by hand at all, send me your address and I’ll send you a sample to try for yourself!

#3. Dr. Drew says “Addicts will always find a way to get drugs.” Only a kid that is addicted to drugs is going to break an Rx Locker (or any lock box) because they know they will get caught. If they can’t break into it they will just go to the neighbor’s house or their friends houses etc. The Rx Locker is not impenetrable and that is it’s best design feature. Once it’s broken you know there is a problem and you can get your kid help because you know they need it. If they want to get in but they can’t, you still have a problem you just don’t know it…

#4. Dr. Drew has treated thousands of people with addictions and HE says that the Rx Locker is the best product. Why?? Because it is affordable for everyone, provides a deterrent and is a early warning system… More people trust Dr Drew and after becoming good friends wiht him over the last months I know I do!

Sincerely,

Kevin Alan

We Matter To Rx Locker

I'm thrilled that Kevin Alan took time to correct some of my assumptions because guess what people, WE MATTER! That's right, Corporate America is interested in what we have to say and in the case of Rx Locker, they are out there reading our comments and taking our feedback to heart. If you have any comments or concerns about Rx Locker feel free to comment below. We already know that Kevin Alan is reading and listening and perhaps Dr Drew might even be wondering what people are saying about it. Make your voice heard and make a difference when it comes to As Seen On TV products.

I just read a blurb about Pitchmen and the Rx Locker. I can't believe the same inventor got 2 gadgets on Pitchmen. Is it true he invented the Grill Glove too?

I watched "Pitchmen" and when I saw the Rx Locker, I said that I knew plenty of people who could have used it. But... That is not why I am writing. Does it bother ANYONE besides me that Dr. Drew has gone on several national television shows promoting this product, and claims HE invented it? I saw it on "The View" "Good Morning America" and in the infomercial he claims he helped develop it. So... what about that?
